Intermittent Fasting and Keto: When Combining Them Helps

Keto is one of several Macrovelo approaches. Intermittent fasting is optional on any of them. This article is for people already on the keto program who want fewer meals to cook — not a promise that fasting plus keto is "better" for everyone.

Some people find keto and a 16:8 eating window go together because high-fat meals keep them full longer. Others feel worse, train poorly, or binge at the first meal. Treat this as a scheduling tool, not a metabolic miracle.

What is intermittent fasting?

Intermittent fasting is about when you eat, not a special food list. A common protocol is 16:8: fast for 16 hours (overnight plus morning) and eat in an 8-hour window (for example 12:00 to 20:00). Other windows exist. None of them replace calories, protein, or sleep.

Why keto can make fasting easier for some people

High-carb days can come with sharper hunger between meals. On a well-formulated keto plate, many people report steadier appetite. That can make delaying breakfast feel natural — "I'm not hungry yet" rather than "I'm forcing a fast."

If you get shaky, dizzy, or irritable, eat. Fasting is not a contest.

What people actually get from the combo

1. Fewer meals to prep

If you skip breakfast and eat lunch and dinner, you cut cooking, cleaning, and shopping. That is the most honest benefit.

2. A way to handle a stall — sometimes

If the scale has been stuck, a few days of a shorter eating window can reduce mindless snacking. It can also just be eating less. If it feels punitive, it will not last.

3. Training still needs fuel

Hard sessions with no food around them can go badly. Put workouts inside or near your eating window when you can.

How to get started (gently)

Don't start keto and a long fast on the same day.

  1. Week 1–2: Focus on keto meals whenever you are hungry. Let the new grocery list settle.
  2. Week 3: Push breakfast later by an hour at a time until lunch is your first meal — if that still feels fine.
  3. Hydrate: During the fasting window, water, black coffee, or unsweetened tea are typical. Skip if caffeine on an empty stomach wrecks you.

Skip fasting entirely if you are pregnant, have a history of disordered eating, take medications that require food, or your clinician has told you not to. Macrovelo will still build meals (and workouts) for a three-meal day.
